Patekar Barishkar!

ध्रिष्ट्ध्युमं पद्मनाभ प्रजापति नीलकंठ धूमकेतु बारिशकर (Dhristdhyumna Padmanaabh Prajapati Neelkanth Dhoomketu Barishkar)is one of my favorite names and characters in Hindi Cinema!!! I remember trying to recall his complete name in the movie so many times in college....

For the ones who do not know or do not remember, this was the on-screen name of Nana Patekar's character in "थोड़ा सा रूमानी हो जाएँ" (Thoda sa Romani ho Jayen). The movie was directed by Amol Palekar and released in 1990.

Enjoy Nana's entry in the movie about 2 minutes into the clip below... If possible, do try to get hold of the movie and watch it too (its on youtube too).. will take some mood to enjoy the movie, but its fantastic!

Closure!

She kept asking herself what went wrong!

She did everything it takes to keep a relationship, or so she thought!

She never felt away from him, even though they were miles apart... though he never felt close to her or so he thought!

She always made time, and he never bothered

She wanted, and he did not need it

She spoke, he never heard

She wanted to hear, he never spoke

An year after they spoke last, she finally gathered enough courage to call him and ask!

the phone rang, and her heart was pounding on every bell, so loud! that she could hear it clearly

Same irritating caller tune, she thought!

He picked up

She said,"Hi"

He asked, "Who's that?"

She said, "Guess!" no wait... she wanted to say "guess who" but said," Neeelima!"

He said," Hi Neelima. How are you? Been a while!"

She said," Why do I feel that you never bothered how I was, what I was, and did not value me in the relationship we shared? Just want to know why?"

He said," wake up idiot... you have been speaking in your sleep for the last 30 minutes." Put some nice hot tea next to her side of the bed, kissed her on the forehead, and walked out to the porch of their honeymoon cottage!

Jim Halpert vs. Dwight Shrute

"The Office" happens to be my favorite television series of all times! I adore the characters in the series, and have a certain amount of dislike for a few in a certain sense!!!

Jim and Pam, also are my favorite on-screen couple of all times!!! And Jim, the guy who knows how to sort things out! and make life a bit tougher on others too in a funny way! :)

See here in the video are some moments between him and Dwight, who is another salesman and peer competitor! If you have not seen the series, please do try to watch! It can take a while to develop a liking for it though, so take your time!

On an unrelated thought, how different is reflected sunlight from direct sunlight?

Its not just Maple that makes Fall pretty!

The weekend was forecasted to be cloudy with rain throughout, however in the last one year, I have learnt to not really trust the weather forecast here and it seems to work almost every single time... including today!!!

The morning started cloudy outside, and very sleepy inside!!! Waking up around 8 and still being in bed when its almost 12 is an amazing experience! To be specific, I have not been sleeping on the bed at all... Have been camping on the floor after the terrible muscle pull last Friday, and now I do not feel like going back to sleeping on the bed!!!

Anyway, had seen a few leaves yesterday while walking back from the office and was determined to go back and take pictures of them irrespective of how the weather was going to behave! but to my luck, it behaved very very well! and what you see below is the result of a short walk around the neighborhood!

Its not just the maple leaves, but almost every single tree starts turning into beautiful bold pastel red, yellow and browns... A sight to see and remember! the Camera, if catches half of it, is doing just the introduction!!!

Enjoy the photographs below and do not forget to click the link at the end for a small slideshow of the Fall-Winter Collection from flickr!

And like I said before... here is the link. I would recommend press F11(Full Screen) as soon as you click the link for a better view.

Went to be a newton, came back with apples!

So I went to an Apple farm to wait below a tree and see if an apple falls on my head and I can figure something better than Gravity!!! but the trees were so small... I wonder how Newton was sitting under an apple tree... there was no place to sit below any of those trees for sure!!! :)

So I did the next best thing, picked apples!

It was fun to walk around trees trying to find apples... there were 1000s of them lying all around the farm as well...

The apples varieties that we finally managed in our bag were
1. Golden Delicious
2. Red Delicious
3. Cortland, and
4. Ida Red

Did I mention
we went around the farm looking for a pumpkin too?

Rachel, the most experienced of us three! She has done it once before! and managed to see the best apples!

Stephenie, my next door neighbor! She was very excited to be there in the farm! and so were me and Rachel!

I did not do anything to the color or sky in this photograph! It just came out so amazing!! And these are the Golden Delicious

I say these were apples too! but Stephenie and Rachel won't agree!

Stephenie trying to reach out to an apple she noticed!

Rachel was more than happy to climb up a ladder to get us the best of the lot from that tree!

And trying to reach out to some more apples!

Don't remember which one these were! Ida Red or Red Delicious!

Stephenie again, trying to figure her way out of the trees!

Red Apples, Green leaves, Blue Sky! perfect day to be out!

This is us trying to pick a pumpkin for Stephenie! According to her, since the time she was a kid, Pumpkins talk to her and she knows which one to pick! and guess what! her pumpkin did find her this afternoon!

Me being clicked when I was shooting!

More pumpkins and more apples...

Once we had a bagfull of apples, we went to the sales shop inside the barn!

Apple sorting in progress!

Fall colors against an old barn wall! always looks good!

Fresh nice juicy red apples from the farm!!!

Stephenie again!!!

There were these huge pumpkins for sale as well!!!

The visit to the farm ended with some delicious apple caramels!!! First timer to these, I never knew that within the caramel wrap, there is an apple! Caramel and apple taste very nice together!

And this is the guard Golden Retriever, enjoying a pat and affection by Rachel!!!

What surprised me today was that these apples were so amazingly shiny... I used to think that the reason why the apples shine so much on the shelves in superstores is that they are polished and all, but I saw that all you need to do it clean off the apple, and it shines like a beauty!!! no need to add wax at all! In the photograph above, there is a small portion that is cleaned up and see how it shines!

And I got a pumpkin for myself too! I am going to carve it for Halloween!!! Told Rachel and Stephenie the story of how Ganesha got his elephant head and what Diwali is all about!!!

All in all a excellent Diwali weekend!!! Thank you Uncle God!!!

At home this Diwali!!!

I was just not excited about Diwali, for ONE simple reason! I am not home!

However, one evening when I reached home from work, I found this packet lying outside the door... now the only thing that I am ordering these days are DVDs of some movies, and this packed could not have a DVD... I picked it up! shook it a bit and realised that there are a few things inside... Wondering what it could be and who would send it, I opened the door, kept my bag aside and opened the box!!!

And I find

Diyas
Roli
Chawal
a Greeting Card
and umm.. Motichoor ke Laddoo in the box!!!

And suddenly Diwali made more sense than it was making so far!!!

Thank you Joy for this lovely gesture! Cannot thank you enough for this! Keeping the card for you to sign, when I see you next!!!!

This Diwali ended up being a nice one in its own taste, with the laddoos, Gaurav bringing in some sweets for me and a shirt for me thinking that I would not have gone anywhere to shop for myself, all my Mamas calling me and getting all excited about talking to me, and then the finale at a colleague's place with a Diwali party... ended up enjoying till 3 am in the morning!

Happy Diwali!

I saw people getting invites to write at the Chai ki Dukaan and secretly hoped for a day when I'd get the invite too. My 'corny and cliched' initiative displayed below worked, and here I am. :D

Here's wishing all the visitors of Chai ki Dukaan a safe and joyous Diwali. Hope you don't burst crackers. And make up for it all by eating lots of mithai. :D

Lets the games begin!

I am really looking forward to the 2010 Commonwealth Games, and looks like they started one year too early!!!

Suresh Kalmadi and Mike Hooper have started the first game, India and most politicians are world champions at... the Blame Game!!!

In the first round, Mike Hooper warms up to the press in a conference and tells in detail about all the plans and that he was optimistic about the completion of all preps before the games... and a day later, Mr. Suresh Kalmadi plays his side of the game by throwing allegations at him and telling us that he has request that he be removed!! "Offence is the best defense, I remember"

And then the semi-final of the game where Mr. Hooper is giving an interview, and is stopped "on camera" from doing that! Stunning display of offensive techniques by Lalit Bhanot! In his words, " If Mike Hooper has to respond to anything, he should respond at home and not in HIS (Lalit's) office.". Check out the video here if you have not seen it yet. In this video, the way Lalit Bhanot looks when Mike is asking him something, it is so clear that he does not have a fkking clue as to why he is asking Mike to stop the interview, but that he just wants him to stop!!!! what losers!!!

My take, this is something that will carry on for about a week while it only gets worse!!!

I really want Delhi to be prepared for the games, but am also afraid, rather have a very strong gut feel that the preparations are highly inadequate and all of this is being done just as a run-up to the truth about how fukked up the planning and execution has been for these games!

I still hope the games can happen when planned! Maybe someone needs to read through why projects fail and make error corrections before its too late... or is it already!

Work Smart

1. look busy! have at least 2 documents on your desk printed always.. and keep changing them every week... print old documents/flowcharts/graphs... it’s not the content that matters, but the presence that matters

2. never walk empty handed around office! Always have a notepad/document file with you... and if possible a coffee mug as well which keeps you fresh while you are working so hard(ly)

3. Always be upto date... keep at least one web-page of some recent news/report/event about your work on the office computer... if someone comes over while you are aimlessly browsing, start the topic of what they feel about that report or news or event

4. Have a to-do list pinned up somewhere on your desk and keep updating it... cut something... add something... but it should be a live one.. if you have a software like sticky notes installed on your system.. have some sticky notes on the top of every window that you are working on

5. Be positive... always have a success story or case study about your work memorized with data and a supporting research report artifact to substantiate that

6. Have a strong social network... make sure you have at 50 similar or better profiles of a variety of experience linked to you on LinkedIn, facebook, orkut, MySpace, myadda, hi5, blahfriends, blahnetwork, blahconnect etc... have some important industry names in it too.. so that you can refer to your conversations with them in your meetings

7. Delete all your not so good testimonials and even the ones which make you look like a super human! You never know who is watching your recommendations and testimonials these days!

8. Demand for two monitors at work. Tell the IT that it makes your work easier and makes you work faster.. and at least one of the monitors should be a LCD, a large one at that because you need to monitor data which would be instrumental in organizations growth and potential

9. Eat with your manager and be ultra-interested in what his life is about! Keep throwing ideas for improvement at him till he resigns or promotes you

10. Don't be stupid enough to follow 1-9 without using your own brain :D

On a partially related and a totally unrelated note!

I at times feel, the good thieves make the best cops! and worst politicians (:P)

awwww...hmmmm...

My problem with Romantic movies is that they more often than not end up being all dreamy and the "awwwww...." types... I don't like it... but then they are movies, right!

My other problem with romantic movies is that they remind me of some part of my personality and character that I have been through and it did not turn out the way it turns out for the people in the movie! I don't like that either! but then they are movies, right!

But having said that, if one is smart enough, there are amazing things that these "awwww..." movies can teach you! all you need to do less of "awww...." and more of "hmmm..." I do not know when I started doing that, but that is what I end up doing! Personally I find most always "awwww...." people kind of idiotic too!

I just saw "He's just not that into you". I wish I could say it that honestly to some women! They would not have been able to take that honesty anyway, even though one of the things that moves us is honesty, till someone is honest with us on our face!

I loved the character of Drew Barrymore and her inability to handle all the technology driven relationships! especially when she talks about getting dumped via multiple technology dependent mediums! poor girl!!!

This is a different movie (What a cliche'd line) ! bit more realistic than the others that I know of atleast till atleast 10 minutes before it finishes!!! I liked this one!

Another romantic movie that I saw and liked recently was "Love Actually"... What I liked about that movie was the story telling and knitting of multiple small stories together into one and the li'il unusualness in characters also something that was worth noticing!!!

..

I realize that my emotional need and emotional availability has reduced to a bare minimum over the last few years!

Though it does not bother me at all, it ends up impacting my friends who at times need reassurances!

I am not sure if there is something that I want to do about it at this point in time! Got a lot of pending to-dos already!

There are times when there are many thoughts in my mind, and there are times when there are none! in both the caes, I do not write anything!

06/10/09

what's in a (last) name?

Aro called me today to discuss what was the full name of Ram!

My instant reaction was Ram Prasad (with my love for Golmal, I could not have come up with something better)
Justify Full
Actually he had called me to tell me that Ram was a South Indian!

He said, D. Ram (and that he was a South Indian) D for Dashrath, and then improvised and said D.A.Ram for Dashrath Ayodhya Ram (and we could go on from there)

and then we got into a more serious discussion about when did we Indians started using sir-names or like a lot of people call them, last names!

From how I see it, Indians probably had last names for a very long time, however they were not being used very often because no artifacts being created for the names... no forms were being filled, no admissions happened with paper trails, or salaries being distributed with signed forms... and a lot of people had salutations being used instead of last names!

I could immediately think of second names of any characters that I know from the past except maybe Tulsi - Das? Kabir also had a second name, but I cannot remember it right now, and he was mostly referred to as Sant Kabir!

Yudhisthir, Ram, Lakshman, Ravan, Krishn, Bhardwaj, Dronacharya, Parashuram, Akbar, Birbal, Babar, and so on are a few names out of the many that I remember and none have a popular second name reference that I know of... they have salutations though!

I now recall some names from history, like Sher Shah Suri, Bahadur Shad Zafar, Jalal ud-din Mohammad Akbar. Akbar was more popular by his Last name, so to speak, and was the son of Mohammad Humayun (Complete Title : "Al-Sultan al-'Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, Jam-i-Sultanat-i-haqiqi wa Majazi, Sayyid al-Salatin, Abu'l Muzaffar Nasir ud-din Muhammad Humayun Padshah Ghazi"). Humayun's father Babar, had a rather easy complete name, Zahir ud-din Muhammad Jalal ud-din Babur. So it seems to me that Mughals were also using some sort of salutation and the reference to Mohammad in their names!

As far as Hindu kings and emperors go, I remember some names like Chandragupta Maurya, however there are multiple views on his last name Maurya and his origin, however he is referred to mostly as Chandragupta only. Another name is Hemu Chandra Vikramaditya!!!

I spent a little more time reading about these names and people and seems like while the second names, or sir names, or Family names ( either before or after the name) have been there for centuries, they have not been very popular in the locals, or maybe they were! We would not know someone who is not that popular from history anyway!

With the coming of English to India, I think paper trails were introduced, documentation and collection of artifacts and forms started which made the use of second/sir names a much popular and now indispensable norm!

Thoughts?

For a long time my take on history was what the first few lines of this song are :) with time, I have realized that I do care more than what I used to !!!

Hot Subjects!!

I wonder how come English and Biology teachers are often oh so hott in schools!!! and in colleges too!!!

Shikha Dar, my bio teacher in DAVCPS
Amrita Sharma, my English teacher in DAVCPS... Not many said it, but when we were getting together for a group photograph in class X, every guy wanted to be as close to Amrita Ma'am as possible :P

Is it the subject? or something else?

Oye Tushar, wo Angrezi ki teacher ka kya naam tha bhai DAV mein? She looked so like Sonali Bendre or better!!! and the day she would wear a saari to college!!! uff!!!

And the term "English Honors की लडकियां " used to be a talking point anyway!!! minus a few exceptions :)

04/10/09

Snippets from the School

Me and Abhishek used to sit on the same bench in class! and there was this one time in English class, when we were sitting on the last bench, for some reason we tried to tilt backwards (the benches did not have a backrest in that class) and the desk just flipped over throwing our bags, our books, and our notebooks on us... and then the bench ofcourse...

what a scene it was!!!

Rashmi Shandilya was the teacher in that period! and we used to be her favorite students :) One of us was also known as her secretary !!!

You can't be my friend if you are "NORMAL"

I just got thinking of people that I am the closest to, and they reciprocate well... to realize that...

I have a friend who drove 4000 kms to relocate
I have friend who gives me credit for all the chichorapanti she does
I have a friend who frowns because it takes more muscles to frown than smile and that is his way of working out
I have a friend who is critical about use of English irrespective of how and when it is used
I have a friend whose enthusiasm about what all she wants to do after her Ph.D can be intimidating at times
I have a friend who one fine day just leaves his job and goes back home without a plan in place
I have a friend who works with an NGO over any other career options because of the small difference it would make to the world
I have a friend who believes in the not so obvious more than the rest of the world I know
I have a friend who I connected with after a gap of 10 years like it was just yesterday and is a brilliant pastry chef
I have friends who get pleasure out of making my life miserable and really not in the "i will take care of him once he starts crying" types but "let's make him cry for life" types
I have friends who would fight like crazy over who has more Calvin and Hobbes
I have friends who treat potty as religion

Are you normal? sorry you do not qualify !!!

Here is something to celebrate friendship

ज़िन्दगी आ रहा हूँ मैं !!!

I wonder why I never posted this one earlier !!!

I have been in love with this song for over a decade now! I remember writing down the lyrics of this song for another friend called Prashant because he heard it from me and liked it too! and I have been told that I sing this one well!

Love to live by every word of this song, till I live !!!

This you-tube clip does not have the third antara of this song...

The song is from the movie Mashaal, directed by Yash Chopra. The lyrics by Javed Akhtar and music by Hridaynath Mangeshkar!

As Good as it Gets!

Jack Nicholson surprises me!!!

  • One Flew Over Cuckoo's Nest
  • Batman
  • As Good as it Gets
  • A Few Good Men
  • Bucket List

Unbelievable !!!

I wanted to watch just half the movie today but ended up watching the full movie!

Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson's characters in this movie are so real that every 15 minutes I felt that I have witnessed something like this outside the screen around me too! Its not one of those dreamy, Walk in the cloud type romantic movies, but if I have to make a list of romantic movies, this probably would be in some of the top... I want to watch Bridges of Madison County again now...!!! and that is when I cannot handle romantic movies well! But I ended up loving this one...

Also if you can help, which movie is that where Meg Ryan comes to the city following her boyfriend, and ends up being with a guy who is spying on his ex-girlfriend who is now with Meg's boyfriend? This guy has some kind of lenses to watch what is happening in the apartment and is projecting on a wall in the one that he is staying!

Anyway... watch "As Good as it Gets" if you have not seen it already! its beautiful!

And I just realised that both Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson got an Academy Award for best actor/actress in a leading role for this movie! I am not surprised! and the Golden Globe awards for best actor and actress too!
