are there lines dividing us?

When I was in Bangalore this time.. i got into a few discussions about south vs. north...

what ppl in the north think about the ones in south and what do southies think about the northies..

I wanted to write a detailed post about those discussions... and probably offend a few ppl in the process too...

But INDIA won the 20-20 world cup.. and we were celebrating the same way.. the smiles were same... the cheers as loud...

no point drawing a south north line anymore...

let it be one country...

  1. Agree totally! There should be no such divide. When I was in Pune, I faced racism (yes I would call it that) from the Marathis... So then onwards we called them ghatis and Maharashtra as Ghatiland. They thought of us Northies as snobs, big time. But then later on, some of us Northies managed to make a difference there, and came back with the ghatis as some of our most cherished friends. Till date. Till the end of life. :D Oh yeah and I saw a couple of ghatis and Northies getting married as well. :D
But phir bhi I would say, our (oops) food ROCKS! HAHA.

  3. @ Reeta...
there will always be people to divide and rule... but i guess.. it at the end of the day comes to my sensibility as an individual to do what i want to..

let me be aggressive... if thats a complaint... i would like to know why... if thats a compliment, i rather thank the other person... if this is just a statement... well we all have the right to speak !!! so let it be...

    i ignore...

  5. i agree there is still a divide...
one would've imagined that in due it will completely thin out, but off late i've noticed that the so called Northies are becoming more welcoming and compassionate, but the southies are not growing even after the highly glorified literacy rate.

But I guess a part of it is about Southies being protective. About their history and present. They want to hold on to it very tightly. And the Northies are invading like never before. They already say that in a few years india will have just a few languages. Hindi, English and 2 or 3 regional languages. Others would vanish under the weight of the above.

  6. Bhai... I think it's the lack of sensitivity towards other cultures. Its good to say "One Country", "Bhai - Bhai", but the reality is not that rosy. Think of a person from a state like Meghalaya or Tripura. Everyday, s/he faces racism, irrespective of whether he goes to "North India" or "South India". Why? Because he is from North East India, not India!?!

Another point: What is South Indian food? The staple food of different states in South are different.

  7. # sharanya....

we actually make a big deal out of the issues internally too.... and thats no joke... i have seen people taking racist here... and big words...

no bhai bhai !!! please... that reduces the chances of flirting around :P

    # ankit...
hmm... thanks for your comment... i hope things become better...

no other country in the world has managed with so many languages and this much of variety like india does... and a lot of people should understand this and be proud of it... and not try to divide...

    # subbu...
bhai I am sorry if saying south indian food gives an incorrect impression of what i am trying to say...

no comparision to the term north indian food used more often than not... but i assume the term south indian food for the items common across... Dosa, Idli,Uttapam, sambhar etc...

i know what you talking about the north east.. unfortunately that more true than a lot of other truths...

par subbu don't you think that the people from the states also play a major role in this discrimination?

  8. Let me illustrate, why I have a problem with generalization about "South Indian" food:

In Kerala, breakfasts may start with Appams or Idiyappams with curry (egg or kadala). For lunch, they might have parota (kerala parota or K.P) with curry or have malabari biriyani. In the evening, they enjoy their puttu...

You see, this is not an exhaustive list of Kerala cuisine, but as far as I know, these food are not eaten as staple food in any other southern states.

Similarly, what is North Indian food? What is not South Indian food is North Indian food? I don't think there is any need to generalize.

Bhai, about your question of whether the people from the states are responsible for their discrimination, I don't know the answer. I have worked and stayed two years in a muslim country, four years in a Northern India city, and two years in a Southern India city, and have never faced major racism myself. I don't know the reason.

  9. There is no reason for the cultures, tradition, foods, etcc in each region for india north, south, east, west to influence each other in the country. Each of these region is different from others since the civilization began in india. Each region has their own history, people who influenced them whther in india or internationally back in indias history. So let each region be its own and in that appreciate and respect each other. Thats it.
