Tring Tring!

Me, the telephone user, has seen so much happening in my life that I often get confused if the past was true or the future is a dream!!!

The fact, however, is that this is just a part of evolution! or shall I say revolution!!!

I used to be in school when we got our first telephone! There used to be only one kind of a telephone at that time... the one that you connect using wires, which stretched all the way to the poles at the corner of your street... and a cut or a nook here or there would mean a screeching disturbance in your connection, or a dead telephone! which would mean that you have to go all the way to the nearest telephone exchange to file a complaint and someone would come and fix it! The telephones of the techies used to be very charming then... they were one single instrument with both the dial and the mike along with the headset! they would just connect the wires to a phone and voila! it works!

Life was simple then!

- A blank call meant no one would ever know that it was me who called... I remember dialling random numbers when mom dad were out of home, and just keeping the phone down when someone picked it up.. had even dialled 100 once, without realising that the police-walas need to cut the line for it to be disconnected... the bugger policeman waiting for 15 minutes before he hung up, while my heartbeat was increasing according to a quadratic equation with every second! Thankfully he disconnected before ma-papa came home!

- I would never know if someone called while no one was at home! (mind it! I am not talking about the riches who had answering machines even then)

- The numbers were just 4 digits long! before a 4 was appended in the beginning, and then another 4, and then a 2, and then a 5 and what not increasing the number of digits in my phone number, an indicator of the increase in number of phone subscribers!

- I did not really know how to keep the dialer silent if I wanted to make a call while parents were around! it would make all that sound because of the spring! duh!!!

Then we got another telephone! and now I could hear on the second instrument if we wanted a three way call between the relatives! A huge drawback being, that if I was talking to a friend, and someone else picked up, they would hear everything! Teenagers hate that, irrespective of what they are talking about!

Anyway, we graduated to having two telephone numbers in an year! one business telephone and another one a home phone! Made life a lot easier!

Now the huge irritant with these dialler phones was the fact that any number having digits like 8, or 9 or 0 were a big task to dial, and if it ends being a wrong number or a busy phone at the other end.. you would have do the entire excercise all over again! bummer!!! So you had be very careful while dialling a number, and keep praying that the person you are trying to talk to is home, and is not talking to anyone else! When mobile phones arrived, my faith in God suddenly increased because I used to pray very hard before I dial a mobile number! numbers starting with 9, numbers which were 10 digits long! oh God!!!!

It took us a while before we got a tone dial phone at my home! They were not free, and pa was never keen on making an investment in an instrument which could not be replaced free of cost by the telecommunications department!

A little later, everything changed!

- you could not make a blank call without the other person knowing who called!
- dialing a phone number sounded like beep beep bopp bopp beep bopp!
- phones stopped sounding like tringgggggggg tringggggggg.. but more like treeeeeeeppppp treeeeeeeeep!
- ringtones, mobile number, caller tune, friends and family, handphone, were the new in-words!

And today, while I spend over 9 hours of my day sitting in the Corporate IT department of a new Telco Company, I evaluate new offerings that can go to Voice and Data Customers! Its a long way from where it all started!

Incidently! my favorite ringtone still happens to be the old phone sound! and it does not look like something I will change given a choice!

30on30 Again!!!!

However this time around, its Paromita who is celebrating her birthday by trying to do something for the society!

Her initiative Deepdana is aimed at raising Rs. 30000 in 30 days, by selling some of her selected photography work!

Paromita is a photographer of immense talent, and this intent of giving something back to the not so privileged, definitely warrants for a lot of support! Please do visit the initiative website, please do spread the word, please do connect back with her to contribute!

Everything helps!!!

I am personally very happy that even though I was not able to do anything special for my birthday this year, 30on30 had an impact which is more than just the collection of Rs. 79000. Paromita is doing a 30on30 this year, and who knows there would be 10 more people who do more 30th year celebrations by trying to do something for the world! Makes all the effort absolutely worth it!!! Thank you and congratulations Paromita for keeping 30on30 alive!

randomization!

Blah!!!

Chuck it!!!! I do not want to think about the fact that getting about 6-7 hours of sleep these days is a luxury, thanks to the bucketloads of things that are happening in my life currently!!! I however feel very sad that Jas was here in India and I was not able to give her anytime. I am really sorry Jas!

Pa, on my request, found the weights that have not been used for the last 3 years... Loads of dust, coupled with rust makes them look sad, but they still weigh the same :) and a bit of cleaning and oiling the bolts would make them work just right! the first step to some light weights happened today in the morning! good!

Am trying to figure out how to make time for some photography or related work... I have not been able to edit a single photo in about 2 months! There is no mention o a quick Jaipur trip on my blog or my flickr page! and there are atleast 30 odd photographs that I still need to transfer to my laptop! Am thinking of giving photography a break for a while and restart afreash sometime in future! Knowing myself, I would not be able to stay away from it for long!

Am also doing very exciting things at work! Very new to me and probably a unique role otherwise too, and there are times when I struggle because till the time I do not know which side the shore is, I do not really like to swim! And this time around, its wide open spaces all around for now! Lets see how things shape up with time!

The Beat is running very fine!!! Its still extremely silent after 2000kms on the dash! I love the way this car moves around in slow traffic, quick response time, decent airconditioning, sharp turning radius and comfortable sitting, make this a good city car! and I am realising that driving a sedan in city traffic is not really worth it! so hatchbacks its going to be for me in the city!!!

Here is a song that I have been listening to and enjoying since my college days, and I am still very very fond of it, me being able to sing it decently being one of the few reasons for it as well!

Have a happy blog!!!!

A blog is the easiest place to vent out, and for a lot of reasons...

1. It does not judge you
2. It does not jump on to resolving your so called problems
3. It stays with you irrespective of how much of sadness you have in your life. As a matter of fact, the sadder you are, the closer a blog seems to be
4. It does not differentiate between emotional bursts, or sadness, or mood swings, or stupidity or enlightenment
5. It will agree to everything that you say... and make you feel better about saying it!

All of it is, however coming at a cost which a lot of us do not probably realise...

1. We get to read a lot of sad stuff, on our blog, or someone elses
2. Blog hopping could end up being a pretty depressing activity if sadness continues to be pumped to the virtual world at this rate
3. And blah and blah!!!!!

So my personal take on it...

keep it happy keep it simple

Inside out!!!

Let me end with a beautiful track from my all time favorite "Everything is Illuminated" with the same title...

Tea Talk

There are really only three kinds of tea

1. Robust Black Teas, made from leaves that have been allowed to ferment

2. Delicate green teas, which are steamed instead of fermented; and

3. In-between oolong teas, which are only partially fermented!

Nothing to do!

So used to being caught up in something or the other, a day to relax does not seem to fit into the larger schema of things!

I should go find something to do!

Only after
I take Meera for her first service
I finish my meeting in the afternoon
and I complete the checklist of things that papa has given!

Cold Calling!

Saar Good maarning!
I yum khalling fraam Standard Chartered Bank! and I want to talk to you about our credit card! I do not need one ma'am!
But saar! why naat? This is a very benefitable credit card!

I really did not have time to discuss, otherwise I would have talked about the benefits of the benefitable credit card for sure!!!

I also got another call from someone representing CRY asking me to donate money! I find it surprising that some organizations have so much money that they hire agencies to ask for more! While a different chain of thought validates the need of such an exercise, something inside me strongly feels that there is a better use of this money than having a 2X2 inch ad running on news websites, or big hoardings, or cold calling and so on!

Coming back to the credit cards, I personally feel that a credit card with an intelligent consumer is a very very smart thing for the consumer.. and with someone who is careless would be something like!!! umm... बन्दर के हाथ मे तलवार!(Bandar ke haath mein talvar...)

Your thoughts?

2009 in Pictures - August

Been away from CKD for a very long time... and irrespective of how much I want to, I just have not been able to get time to get online!!!

The EDGE on the iPhone does not help either!

But here I am... with a post that has been waiting to be published for almost about a month now! Enjoy the pictures of last August...

It was a beautiful month in Milwaukee.. I also went to Minneapolis and had a great weekend there...

Saw movies on a home projection system back to back!!!

Went with office friends to a cabin some 2.5 hours away from Milwaukee up north, and led my team to a victory in the games we played over two days, the highlights being me eating bitter gourd, and finished about 24 golgappas in just below 3 minutes!!!

Life has been great lately! I struggle at times with the new profile that I am in now with MTS, and at the same time I thoroughly enjoy the learning that I get almost everyday! I finish my day promising myself that I will do better the next day!

Its very new for me.. the whole TELCO thing, and how a company totally working in India, works!!! but that's an interesting topic for the next post (whenever that comes)

For now let's be silent in honor of the long silence on Chai ki Dukaan, and just enjoy how the month of August in 2009 was!!!

Discount = Free Free Free!

That is what comes to my mind every time I see the crowds outside a store which is offering discounts... and mind it, these stores have to be stores where women's clothing is being sold!

A lot of other apparel stores do give discounts, but none of them seem to be as popular as the ones who have sarees and other dress material on sale... Today evening I happened to be in a line of people waiting to get inside Meena Bazaar, Noida which was offering a flat 50% off on sarees and suits and some other readymade stuff for women!

It was a nifty fifty discount, but the line outside and the crowd inside made me feel that you could just pick up any saree and walk out without paying a dime! But as it turned out, I had to pay something for those sarees. Now Ma had to get some because of a few functions in our family and at her colleagues places, but most who bought sarees as if they were going to retail them at their respective houses, did not really look like they needed them! but maybe they did!

Does not matter how many clothes she has, the first thought that comes to a woman's mind when she opens her closet the first thing in the morning is, "Oh I don't have anything to wear today!!!" Pun definitely intended!

Thank you Kuldeep!

You were instrumental in a lesson well learnt!

Lesson - Identifying your own mistake and making an effort to apologize and try not to repeat it again makes a relationship stronger!

Earth Time!

There is something called an Earth Hour tonight!!! We all are supposed to switch off the lights between 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm!

I am wondering, with summers coming there would be a lot of unwanted earth hours and even earth days making summers the earth season in a lot of Indian homes, thanks to the electricity department!

Also this earth hour, I feel makes more sense where there is no switching off of the lights 24 hours a day! When I was in UK and US, most malls had all their lights on 24X7 irrespective of the day of the year! I think they should switch the lights off more often than just one hour an year anyway!

Do I still need to switch off my lights? I guess I will if there is no good movie on the TV!!!

From now on, I would call every power cut "Earth Time"

hmm...

I am getting to realize that I do not want to be labelled as a photographer!

I like it!

Nani

I was in Meerut last night, and the expression and body language that my Nani had, when I told her that I am ok with getting married and would try to get married soon, was priceless!

Just one of the moments, which will make my marriage worth it I guess!

The heart and home gets a BEAT!

So finally after a wait of about 50 days, we got our third car!

First White, then Red and now a Blue... my family tends to stick with the primary colors only :)

Radha and Meera outside the house :)

Let's talk about the good in this car as I observed in the first 5 kilometers of my drive

1. The front of the car is very bold, and aggressive. Makes it stand out well!
2. The lights are smartly designed, though I would have liked a different set of headlights. GM has toned down some styling to cater to the cost conscious Indian market.
3. The rear door handle is cleverly concealed next to the window, and does not show up on the door, giving it a two door feel in the first quick look. The original (which was first seen in Transformers 2 is a two door)
4. The interiors are futuristic... Brilliantly designed dashboard, gives it a sports car feel, and the matte chrome three spoke steering wheel is just adequately sized.
5. The rear lights are big and would be helpful in Delhi fog
6. The head room is great
7. 14" wheels are standard and that gives the car a better fuller look, plus helps a bit of stability
8. The LT version that I got has an integrated music system which makes for a good looking interior and plays my iPOD
9. The seats hold the back very nicely and have a decent lumbar support too
10. The speaker system is decent if you do not want to spend more on thump and sound volumes
11. The paint job is nice and clean and the build quality of the vehicle is good. This is anyway expected from GM
12. The car is extremely silent
13. There are intelligent spaces in the car to keep things

A few things that are not so good about the car
1. The boot space is bad and so is the glove box. Its very small too.
2. The tires are thin... 155/70R4 is something screams for an upgrade to atleast 170/65R14... It would take away a few previous kilometers from the mileage though...
3. There is no left foot rest!!!! What was GM thinking? That will make long drives difficult!!!

And now because I have been driving a FIAT... let's talk about how BEAT feels when compared to a PALIO
1. It feels light.. very light... has both advantages and disadvantages..
2. Palio feels very rich in terms of its interiors as compared to the Beat...
3. The tyre upgrade that I did for Palio makes it feel more stable... I am already waiting for my first tyre upgrade
4. The doors of a Palio close with a THUD... and the Beat closes with a slightly subtle thud... makes me feel strange!
5. Palio has door stoppers which stop the door from swinging open when you get out of it.. you always have to make an effort to open the door... That simple functionality has helped me a lot in the last 5 years of owning the car!

Its great to have two good cars now.. One which is very slick, modern and smart, and the other which feels safe, strong and is still going very strong after 5.5 years of a trouble free ownership. And both bold, aggressive, and very stylish in their own worlds!!!!

The Great Indian Wedding

Cliche'd Title... rightly so.. there is so much so cliche'd about the Indian Wedding that one would not even know where to start from. I intend to write about my observations about an Indian wedding, or maybe a "how it's done for people from UP" wedding as I walk through the course myself (in due course of time) and how I see things happening around!

What you read below is something that I had written about a month ago at a small gathering at my cousin's place!

I am sitting at my cousin's place attending a small function where his future in-laws have come to formalize the marriage and start formally calling him the son-in-law or Damaad. My cousin is a very soft spoken family guy and has been agreeing to most of the things a very typical arranged marriage system offers and demands from a groom-to-be, right from meeting the girl for not more than 10 minutes, and that too after the marriage was fixed, not talking too much with the girl till marriage, to adjusting with the marriage of two families.

Yes, in India its families that are married and not just bride and the groom. I am sitting amongst auntijies and taijis, and mausijis and chachijies and what not, who remember me by my nick name and find it very awkward associating a 30 year old man with a name like that! This cousin in question is younger than me and a part of all initial conversations, and no points for guessing, is when am I getting married? or why am I not yet married? Mom over years have perfected a response to this question, which is, Baat Chal Rahi hai, Dekho kya hota hai! i.e. there are talks going on, let's see when things take shape! It does stop any further questions, however not before an elaborate mention of some distant relatives daughter who is very pretty, slim, tall, well educated and comes from a family like none other!

Me not being married is a big concern also because most men of my age in their opinion have atleast two kids, one of which is already going to a school! My dear friend Prashant, the clock is ticking! tick tock tick tock!

Now that the fact that I am not yet married and would soon be getting married, is established in the conversation, I now get treated like any other kid around. Everyone suddenly has this uncontrollable urge to stuffing me with food, and the keen observation that I have reduced weight and I look weaker than before comes alive! The fact that no one around has seen me for years, and have no clue of what I used to look like even an year ago has very little or no statistical impact on this observation!

Whatever said and done, this overwhelming affection that you get in Indian homes from people you know and people you don't, makes India a better country to be in from the rest of the world!

A couple of hours later, after the girl's family has completed the "Ladka Hamara Hua" (the boy is ours) formalities, the environment is suddenly a lot louder and happier. Pleasantries have been exchanged, sweets distributed, and envelops with 10 and 50 rupee notes have been given by the bride's father to my mausiji for distribution in the family... These envelops equal the number of people in the family, first cousins of my cousin, brothers and kids of my mausaji's and their family, and who and what nots... This is some sort of a ritual that is important, and is called Milai, something that you give when you formally meet the boy's family, only in this case they have met just a handful of people they got envelops for!

There are some kids roaming around the house and according to the auntijis mine should have been a part of that gang, but that is beside the point! There is this li'il girl about 5 years old who is looking at her reflection in the glass door of a showcase and calling it a ghost! Cute! and that makes her the centre of attention now. I am writing this and am trying to read "Chai Chai" ( I need to write my thoughts about that book too soon)

The ladies in the room are also talking about the various connections between various people and how they are related to each other through some distant chacha or mama or mausi aur dewar or bhabhi and so on... During all this relationship networking, what stands out is the fact that all the women in this room still refer to themselves along with the village they belong to! and there is a certain amount of pride which is associated in this reference! interesting!

Infact, for a long time I used to refer to Kariyari (my mother's village) as mine, which irked my grandfather (Father's father) like nothing else... That's is another story that I would write sometime later!

For now, the people have started dispersing and its time for me to get back home!

Life is Good!

  • A full bus with waiting, but still getting a seat!
  • Getting out of the bus stand without mugged by the guys hard-selling hotels in the city!
  • Having a car to drive and a post midnight snack in an open air restaurant on the 8th floor of a hotel in the not so crowded area!
  • Pyaz Kachodi before sunrise
  • Tea @ the tea shop of Brij Bihari Yadavji at sunrise
  • Walking around a fort early morning
  • Sleeping through most of the day
  • Walking around busy markets in the evening
  • 1:00 a.m. coffee after driving 125 kms
  • Though stimulating conversations throughout the night, and reaching home at 4 in the morning!!

Life is great! I think I said good before, but no! its GREAT! :)
